Lead Lined Glass

Phillips Safety offers a comprehensive range of lead lined radiation shielding glass for protection against radiation exposure for Medical, Industrial and Research applications. You can choose between different standard sizes or order a custom-made one that best suits your needs.

WHAT IS LEAD LINED GLASS

Lead lined glass is a specialized type of annealed glass that incorporates lead oxide and other heavy metals with the purpose of providing effective protection against radiation by absorbing the energy emitted by the radiation source. This unique glass is widely employed in various medical settings, including dentist offices, hospitals, and laboratories where x-rays and other radiation therapies are conducted. Additionally, it finds applications in industrial environments, such as x-ray imaging of welds on airplanes and pipelines.

The primary function of lead glass is to safeguard x-ray technicians, bystanders, and researchers working in medical facilities. It acts as a protective barrier against gamma and x-ray radiation in a range of medical imaging procedures, including general x-ray rooms, PET scanners, CT scanners, and panoramic x-rays, among others. However, it’s essential to note that due to the magnetic properties of MRIs, lead glass cannot be utilized in these specific environments, as alternative materials are required to ensure safety and functionality.

HIGH QUALITY X-RAY GLASS

Phillips Safety’s lead lined glass is uniformly dense and composed of high-quality materials, ensuring a consistent and reliable shielding value. It is specifically designed for shielding against medical x-rays, gamma rays, alpha particles, and beta particles.

Our x-ray lead glass options also meet the 2mm lead equivalency standard, which is commonly used in general x-ray rooms by healthcare professionals. It’s important to consult with your local health official or radiation physicist to determine the required lead shielding for your specific room.

Lead lined glass is a highly reliable and versatile form of radiation protection widely used in various applications within the medical research and treatment field. It is specifically designed to shield against gamma-ray and x-ray radiation. The thickness of the lead glass directly corresponds to the level of radiation shielding it provides. For example, glasses with a thickness of 8mm (5/16″) and a lead equivalency of 2.0 mm Pb offer the same level of protection as a 2 mm thick lead-lined wall.

One of the key advantages of lead lined glass is its transparency, which allows for effective observation of patients or isotopes on the other side of the glass. This transparency enables medical professionals to carry out their tasks efficiently, whether it involves observation, research, or assisting in radiation tests with patients, all while minimizing the risk of long-term radiation exposure.

LEAD LINED GLASS APPLICATIONS

Lead lined glass finds applications in various industries, including airport security X-ray stations, industrial x-ray imaging of welds, electron beam shielding, non-destructive testing (NDT), and Farnsworth–Hirsch Fusor shielding. Its popularity in these industries stems from its safety features, unique properties, and the ability to customize it according to specific size, shape, and thickness requirements.

Although lead glass is widely used in various fields, its primary application remains in the medical and diagnostic imaging industry. Visually, lead glass has a light yellow hue, which allows for light transmission and visibility while reducing direct reflection, distinguishing it from translucent glass.
